Nexus 7 docking station coming in "early December"

Nexus 7

We asked on episode 117 of the Android Central Podcast about when we would see a docking station for the Nexus 7.  An astute listener who is also one of those "people close to the matter" decided to toss us a bone and directed us to the Japanese ASUS site which has what appears to be a landscape audio dock for the 7-inch wonder coming at the beginning of December.

There's not a lot of info, but it says we can use the USB port, and it has a 3.5mm audio output -- which can only mean it's using the pogo pins for power and audio transmission. It will sell for 3,480 Japanese Yen (about $41 USD) sometime in early December.

A quick look at my calendar tells me it's almost early December now, so I'm sharpening my credit card. You can bet we'll be trying to get at least one of these when they are available. Hit the link below to see for yourself, and follow the break for the translated version of the website entry.

Mercury Contains Water Ice at its Poles

It may be the closest planet to the Sun, but even Mercury has water ice. A lot in fact?as much as 100 billion to 1 trillion tons, according to a trio of studies published today by scientists working with NASA?s MESSENGER orbiter. The findings, out today in the journal Science, are the first to give strong evidence of water in Mercury?s polar regions, following decades of speculation.

Using the neutron spectrometer aboard MESSENGER?which became the first spacecraft enter Mercury?s orbit in March?scientists detected unprecedented high concentrations of hydrogen within the craters in Mercury?s polar regions. Combined with the temperature models created from topographic data taken with the orbiter?s laser altimeter, and the researchers had their evidence: Pure water deposits on Mercury.

"If it was the neutrons alone, it would be harder to say, 'Bang, it's water ice,'" says David Lawrence, MESSENGER participating scientist. "But when you combine that with the radar data, the topography, thermal maps, they're all pointing to the same conclusion?it's got to be ice."

It may seem improbable that a planet where temperatures can register as high 800 F at the equator would have ice, but the surface of Mercury is one of extremes. Since Mercury?s rotational axis isn?t titled like the Earth's, craters within the polar regions of the planet are permanently shaded from the Sun?s rays, causing temperatures within their depths to sink as low as -370 F. That's certainly cold enough to retain any ice from a comet impact millions of years ago, Lawrence says.

While the recent discovery doesn't improve our understanding of how the planet initially formed?a topic that continues to confound scientists to this day?it does pose a new set of questions for researchers.

"In the planetary science community we've been living with this idea of water ice for 20 years," Lawrence says. "But the new questions are, how do we measure this is more detail? How deep does it go?" Further study into the ice will hopefully reveal the source of the ice?perhaps comet impacts?and it's extent. With enough fuel to last it until 2015, MESSENGER will give scientists plenty of time to find out.

Italian Maestro Riccardo Muti Launches Rome Opera Season

by Naharnet Newsdesk 28 November 2012, 10:51 W460

Italian conductor Riccardo Muti on Tuesday opens the new season at Rome Opera devoted to Giuseppe Verdi and Richard Wagner with a performance of "Simon Boccanegra" by the great Italian Romantic composer.

Muti emphasized Verdi's "greatness and universality" in a speech to students at Rome's La Sapienza University on the eve of the premiere at an opera house where he has been appointed "honorary conductor for life".

He reminded his audience of Verdi's role in the unification of Italy in the 19th century, which is also reflected in "Simon Boccanegra" with its message of countering internecine warfare in the port of Genoa set in the 14th century.

The production is by Britain's Adrian Noble, former director of the Royal Shakespeare Company, and the sets are by Dante Ferretti, a three-time Oscar winner who has worked with cinema greats Federico Fellini and Martin Scorsese.

The Romanian baritone George Petean and Uruguay's Dario Solari will take turns playing the hero Simon Boccanegra, while Maria Boccanegra is being played by Italian sopranos Maria Agresta and Eleonora Buratto.

Ahead of the bicentenary of the birth of the composer on October 10, 2013, two more of Verdi's works will be presented during the season with "The Two Foscari" produced by Germany's Werner Herzog and "Nabucco".

Rome Opera, which has balanced its accounts with an increase in attendance, will also celebrate Wagner's bicentenary with his work "Rienzi" and the centenary of British composer Benjamin Britten with "Curlew River".

The season will wrap up next year with another classic, "Turandot" by Puccini, with a stage set by British artist David Hockney.

More information on the season is available at www.operaroma.it.

(AP) ? Tight end Delanie Walker arrives at work at 6 a.m. each day, and Colin Kaepernick always beats him to 49ers headquarters.

The quarterback clocks in before most of his teammates for that matter.

With that work ethic and standout performances, Kaepernick has earned himself a third straight start at quarterback for San Francisco on Sunday at St. Louis.

"Kap's here before me. He's here lifting weights," Walker said.

Coach Jim Harbaugh made the announcement Wednesday that Kaepernick got the nod over Alex Smith after the second-year pro led the NFC West-leading Niners (8-2-1) to victories in the past two games, his first two NFL starts.

"The rationale is we have two quarterbacks that we feel great about as a starting quarterback," Harbaugh said. "Both have earned it, both deserve it ? Alex over a long period of time, Colin by virtue of the last three games. It tips the scales. Colin we believe has the hot hand. We'll go with Colin. And we'll go with Alex. They're both our guys."

Yes, Harbaugh is still leaving open every possibility, saying it still could be a week-to-week decision. All Kaepernick knows is he will begin Sunday's game under center.

Harbaugh warned, "I wouldn't assume anything."

"To start talking about speculation or every permutation you could get into, we're not going to speculate on it," Harbaugh said. "We're worried about everything and we fear nothing."

The reigning NFL Coach of the Year told his players on the field at some point during Wednesday morning's walk-through practice.

Kaepernick has completed 48 of 74 passes for 680 yards and three touchdowns with one interception and was sacked six times. He has a 102.3 passer rating.

"I don't know if it's a hot hand. Whatever you want to call it. I'm just happy I get to go back out there," Kaepernick said. "It's a great chance to lead this team and show we're a great team and we can go into the playoffs."

Smith, the 2005 No. 1 overall draft pick, hardly looked happy on the sideline during Sunday's win over the Saints after being medically cleared from a concussion suffered in the first half of a 24-24 tie against St. Louis on Nov. 11.

"That's coach's decision," running back Frank Gore said. "He said before he's going to go with the hot hand, and he's sure that Kap's got the hot hand right now. I just feel we've got two good quarterbacks who can help us win. That's a plus for the team."

As the questions about his quarterback decision kept coming from every direction, Harbaugh repeatedly said, "I think I've covered and plowed that ground about as thoroughly as it can be plowed."

Losing his job is nothing new for Smith in what has been a roller coaster eight-year NFL career filled with promotions and demotions. Even after his last full game was an impressive win on Monday Night Football at Arizona on Oct. 29 that earned him NFC Offensive Player of the Week honors. In a near-perfect night, Smith completed 18 of 19 passes for 232 yards and three touchdowns without an interception. He had a 157.1 passer rating and connected with nine different receivers.

Smith bounced from starter to the bench throughout 2010 after coming into the year entrenched as the starter ? and that's been his story each year except for during last year's turnaround season. He is 19-5-1 in two years playing for former NFL quarterback Harbaugh.

Smith was expected to speak with reporters Thursday, the team said.

In the locker room, players have said all the right things: supporting both quarterbacks, while reiterating it is Harbaugh's call to make.

"It's getting very old. It's kind of taking away from what the Niners are doing, all this fuss about our quarterback situation," Walker said. "(Alex) definitely didn't lose his job. Kap is just playing well, so that's what I think you're seeing right now. A lot of guys on offense are feeding off it. So we're just going to go with Kap until Jim Harbaugh decides otherwise."

Walker knows it's probably not over yet, though, as Smith very well could get another shot sometime over the final five games.

Also Wednesday, Harbaugh said kicker David Akers is nursing an undisclosed injury, and that's why the 49ers worked out kickers Tuesday. Akers was later listed limited in practice because of a pelvis injury. He looked strong at the start of practice, kicking field goals from 50 yards and demonstrating ample leg strength and accuracy. He missed what would have been the game-winning field goal in overtime last time against the Rams, then missed one from 50 yards in the fourth quarter and had another blocked from 33 yards out Sunday at New Orleans. Akers was clipped by a Saints player after his fourth extra-point attempt in the third quarter but showed no visible signs of injury.

He has missed four of his last seven tries from 40 to 49 yards and eight of his last 21 overall. He ranks 29th in field-goal percentage at 70.4 after setting a single-season NFL record last season with 44 made field goals.

"David Akers is working through something and we want to make sure we have a Plan B," Harbaugh said.

NOTES: Walker didn't practice but said he expects to play against the Rams after bruising a hip and his ribs Sunday in the Superdome. ... In addressing the season-ending injuries of WR and return man Kyle Williams (knee) and RB Kendall Hunter (ankle), Harbaugh said, "The sad thing for all of us is two known friends and trusted agents, Kyle Williams and Kendall Hunter, are going to be out for the season." ... Also on Wednesday's practice report: LB Aldon Smith (shoulder) and S Darcel McBath (concussion).

Retail Stores Open For Business Sunday Dec. 23 | Bernews.com

The Bermuda Chamber Commerce Retail Division has successfully lobbied Government for an extension to store hours on Sunday, December 23rd, giving residents one more full day to shop before for the holidays.

In making the announcement, Chamber Retail Chair Ms. Paula Clarke noted; ?The Chamber is delighted to confirm that following discussions with Minister Wayne Furbert, we have been granted an Exemption to the Public Holidays Act 1947, allowing any retailer, regardless of size, the opportunity to be open from 9am to 9pm, Sunday, December 23rd.?

In accordance with a Legal Notice dated 23rd day of November, 2012: Section 8 of the Public Holidays Act 1947 (which prohibits the opening of shops on public holidays subject to exceptions in the Act) shall not apply to a person who operates a shop having a total retail floor space area of 2,500 square feet or more, between the hours of 9:00am and 9:00pm on Sunday 23rd December 2012.

Chamber Executive Director Mrs. Joanne MacPhee stated; ?This is the second time this year that The Chamber has successfully lobbied the Ministry of Business Development and Tourism for an exemption to the Act; the first being Good Friday, April 6th when it was hoped the exemption would stimulate much needed retail sales in St. George?s. Regrettably in that instance our hard work was for naught due to the fact that the Azamara Journey was unable to dock in the Old Town due to high winds.

?This time we are certain that come wind, rain or shine shoppers will be out en masse taking advantage of these convenient operating hours, as retailers continue to strive to create exciting shopping experiences for locals and visitors alike.?

Explaining further Mrs. MacPhee noted ?Once again, the Chamber?s considerable efforts will not only benefit our members, but the entire retail community. The Chamber remains steadfastly committed to stimulating economic growth in Bermuda across all sectors, and we are proud of the fact that we continue to be a positive catalyst for change. ?

Mrs. Clarke concluded by saying; ?Our retail members view this as another excellent opportunity to better serve our customers and we are delighted that the Ministry of Business Development and Tourism has acted so quickly, recognizing the need to provide business with the flexibility required to respond promptly to market changes.

?I am sure that stores will be fully stocked with a diverse range of competitively priced, quality items and sales staff will be eager to assist customers with last minute shopping choices.?

TEXT-S&P Summary: First Ship Lease Trust

(The following statement was released by the rating agency)

===============================================================================

Summary analysis -- First Ship Lease Trust ------------------------ 28-Nov-2012

CREDIT RATING: B+/Negative/-- Country: Singapore

Primary SIC: Trusts, nec

19-Apr-2012 B+/-- B+/--

23-Nov-2009 BB-/-- BB-/--

===============================================================================

Rationale

The rating on Singapore-based First Ship Lease Trust (FSL) reflects the

company's exposure to the weak credit profiles of its lessees and likely weak

freight rates over the next one to two years due to a downturn in the global

shipping industry. FSL's predictable cash flows from long-term lease contracts

protect the company from the volatility--to the extent its customers meet

their rent obligations. An improvement in FSL's short-term liquidity also

supports the rating.

We assess FSL's business risk profile as "weak." We expect conditions in the

shipping industry to remain difficult in 2013 due to an oversupply of ships,

tepid demand, and high bunker fuel prices. Over the past one to two years,

several FSL vessel charter contracts were terminated because the

counterparties faced financial difficulties. This increased FSL's exposure to

the spot market and decreased its EBITDA margin. In our view, a prolonged

downturn in the shipping industry could further increase the risk that some

more lessees may fail to pay rentals on time and renegotiate or terminate

charter arrangements. In our base case, we expect FSL's EBITDA margin to fall

below 70% in 2012 from 77% in 2011, and stay at those levels for one to two

years.

We assess FSL's financial risk profile as "aggressive." In our base-case

scenario, the company's key financial ratios are likely to remain weak. We

expect FSL's ratios of funds from operations (FFO) to debt and of debt to

EBITDA to be 11%-15% and 5x-6.5x, respectively, in the next one to two years.

The EBITDA interest coverage is likely to be 3x-4x in the same period. Most of

FSL's long-term contracts generate predictable cash flow. The company's

improved short-term liquidity following revisions in two loan covenants and

suspension of cash dividends until June 2013 support its financial risk

profile. However, we believe the downside risk to FSL's financial performance

is still significant given that counterparty risks are likely to remain high

in the next one to two years. Our base case does not incorporate potential

losses from further customer defaults or restructuring.

Liquidity

We assess FSL's liquidity to be "adequate," as defined in our criteria. The

company has no short-term debt maturities. FSL's liquidity profile has

improved following the relaxation in two covenants and the suspension of

dividend distribution until June 2013. We expect the ratio of liquidity

sources to uses to be 1.3x-1.4x in the next 12-18 months. Our liquidity

assessment is based on the following assumptions:

-- FSL's sources of funds include cash and cash equivalents of US$18.2

million as of Sept. 30, 2012, (after excluding US$15 million minimum cash

balance that the company is required to maintain as per its loan covenants)

and estimated FFO of about $50 million.

-- FSL has US$44 million of scheduled debt amortization per year and

scheduled interest payments of about US$24 million.

We assume that FSL will not acquire any new vessels in 2012 and 2013.

Outlook

The negative outlook reflects our view of the high credit risk of FSL's

lessees and the company's exposure to the volatile spot freight market amid a

prolonged downturn in the shipping industry.

We could lower the rating if FSL incurs large losses from defaults by

customers, or we see high likelihood of a covenant breach. In addition, lower

spot market freight rates than we expect could weaken the company's credit

protection measures and exert downward pressure on the rating. EBITDA coverage

of gross interest expenses of less than 2.5x or a ratio of FFO to gross debt

below 10% would indicate such weakening.

We could revise the outlook to stable if we see clear signs of an improvement

in the credit quality of FSL's lessees, along with a sustained improvement in

the company's credit protection measures and liquidity. Given that

counterparty risks are likely to remain significant over the next 12 months,

we believe the possibility of a positive rating action is low.

Remembering and Creating #HolidayMemories - #YesMemory ...

I have many fond memories of holiday seasons form my childhood, though most holidays are blurred into one collective memory of late nights at Grandma?s house with cousins, music, and an abundance of good food.
Family Christmas card 1959

This is my mom?s family Christmas card, circa 1959. I love it!

?

I remember sitting around the piano singing Christmas carols with my aunts, uncles, and cousins while Grandma played the piano. I can picture Grandma and Grandpa?s tall Christmas tree by the front window and all of her hand made ornaments.

But it?s the holidays that were different that really stand out in my memory.

Like our first Thanksgiving away from our family in California ? We weren?t quite sure how to celebrate Thanksgiving without all of the aunts, uncles, cousins, and Grandma and Grandpa (and all of the special dishes they each brought to the table) so we decided to have Thanksgiving dinner out. The food was decent, but it wasn?t what we craved (like Grandma?s strawberry jello salad or Aunt Connie?s crescent rolls or my apple pie).

holidaymemories food

But the thing that I remember most about that Thanksgiving was that the server filled my Sprite glass with water every single time she passed our table. It was depressing and amusing all at the same time.

I also remember the first Christmas my family spent in Portland, OR. We had planned on celebrating Christmas a few days early so that we could drive down to California to spend our traditional Christmas Eve with the extended family. We woke up on our fake Christmas to freshly fallen snow ? our very first white Christmas ever.

But before we could grab the camera to take a picture of our beautiful, snowy backyard, the neighbor boys ran straight across the yard?because THEIR mom had told them not to run through THEIR backyard to ruin the perfect picture. Remember ? this was a first snow for us. Exciting stuff.

Now I?m a mom with a family and holiday traditions of my own, but I?m still on the look out for new ways to create holiday memories. This past week, we ROCKED the family memories by spending all week in a vacation home in Florida with my husband?s entire family. I know this Thanksgiving will stand out in my kids? minds as one of their best ever.

And now we?re totally ready to kick off the holiday season and continue making memories together.

Israel's Defense Minister Barak quits politics

Nir Elias / Reuters

Israel's Defence Minister Ehud Barak announced his resignation from politics at a news conference in Tel Aviv on Monday. A former prime minister, he has served as defense minister since 2007.

By NBC News staff and wire reports

JERUSALEM - Defense Minister Ehud Barak, a main architect of Israel's policy toward Iran's nuclear program, said in a surprise announcement on Monday that he was quitting politics and would not run in the Jan. 22 national election.

"I have decided to retire from political life and not to run for the next Knesset ... I will end my term as defense minister once the next government is established, in about three months," he told a news conference.

"I want to dedicate more time to my family. I feel I have exhausted dealing with political life, which has never been a passion of mine, and I feel there is room to allow other people to serve in senior roles in Israel," he said.

ANALYSIS: It may not be over for Israel?s Barak

Opinion polls had predicted a poor showing for the small centrist Independence party that Barak currently leads, but recently indicated that voter support had strengthened as a result of Israel's eight-day offensive in the Gaza Strip that ended in a cease-fire on Wednesday.

Barak, 70, has been a key player in Israel's tough policy toward curbing Iran's nuclear ambitions and has been Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's unofficial envoy to Washington in order to smooth over differences with the Obama White House. However, the two, who enjoyed a close working relationship for most of the past four years, have reportedly?fallen out over whether to defer to the U.S. on any attack against Iranian nuclear facilities.

He has been defense minister since 2007 and served as prime minister from the Labor party from 1999 to 2001.

Before getting involved in politics, Barak was an army commando who rose to the highest ranks of the military, becoming Israel's most decorated soldier. As prime minister, he initiated Israel's withdrawal from southern Lebanon in 2000. Then, two years after becoming prime minister, he lost an election to Ariel Sharon.

After his resignation, Barak says he plans to "study, to write, to live and have a good time."

100% How to Survive a Plague

All Critics (45) | Top Critics (22) | Fresh (44) | Rotten (0)

A raw history, often cluttered and sometimes repetitive but, when strategies fail along with immune systems, deeply affecting.

Presents a valuable template for how grassroots activism can temper societal prejudice and challenge governmental indifference in the face of a mysterious and remorseless killer.

[A] powerful, messy and tremendously moving documentary ...

"How to Survive a Plague" captures a saddening, maddening era that seems like far too many lifetimes ago.

It can feel inchoate, dropping the viewer in the middle of events without much context, and it exacts an emotional toll. But its raw quality also makes it compelling viewing.

Plague isn't the history of a disease so much as the history of a movement, and a portrait of those who refused to suffer passively.

Beautifully inspiring and, obviously, also a great cautionary tale.

A riveting look at LGBT protesters during the AIDS crisis - and an object lesson that if the revolution is going to be televised, it's good to have the revolutionaries holding the cameras.

This is a moving documentary, as hopeful as it is tragic.

A serious, moving and sometimes astonishingly well-organized documentary about the history of AIDS activism.

The title doesn't necessarily convey this, but "How to Survive a Plague" is an inspiring and hopeful documentary.

[An] unflinching look at the activists' mistakes and acheivements, their regrets, their very solemn pride at a victory attained at so high a cost.

Ultimately, the story presented by the former reporter for Boston's defunct Gay Community News is one of hope.

At once a fascinating history and a compelling call to action.

This amazingly well-done, admirably dry-eyed documentary about a true human victory over what was once a universal death sentence might well be the year's finest.

... compelling as a recent historical document, but also has contemporary resonance in its depiction of the influence of activism on social causes.

Prescribe morning-after pills in advance, say pediatricians

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Wading into the incendiary subject of birth control for young teenagers, the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) on Monday called on the nation's pediatricians to counsel all of their adolescent patients about emergency contraception and make advance prescriptions for it available to girls under 17.

Because current federal policy bans over-the-counter sales of the pills to girls under 17, having a prescription on hand could help younger teens obtain emergency contraception more quickly than if they have to contact a physician only after they need it.

Calling the AAP decision "significant," Susan Wood, former assistant commissioner for women's health at the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), said, "it's not often you see physician organizations saying that their patients are better off without the physician involvement."

It is anyone's guess whether pediatricians will heed their organization's recommendation, but AAP leaders are optimistic.

"We do hope that pediatricians read the policy statement and follow the recommendations," said Dr. Cora Breuner, a pediatrician at Seattle Children's Hospital who led the AAP panel that produced the recommendations. "The Academy prides itself on a devoted membership."

Emergency contraception for adolescents has been one of the most politically fraught areas in healthcare for almost a decade.

In 2005 the FDA declined to approve any over-the-counter sales of Plan B, a "morning-after pill," overruling its panel of outside experts as well as its own scientists. Last December the FDA reversed that stance and moved to approve over-the-counter sales with no age limits. But Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius overruled it, ordering that for girls under 17 the pills remain available only by prescription.

The policy means that women in their 20s, 30s, or beyond must also present proof of age, and that teenagers "face a significant barrier if they suddenly need emergency contraception at midnight on a Saturday," said Wood, who resigned from the FDA in 2005 over its Plan B decision and is now director of the Jacobs Institute of Women's Health at George Washington University in Washington, D.C.

The most common form of emergency contraception is a high dose of a regular birth-control pill such as Plan B and Plan B One-Step from Teva Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd or Next Choice from Watson Pharmaceuticals Inc. They generally sell for $10 to $80 and, although they can work as long as 120 hours after unprotected sex, are most effective in the first 24 hours.

All work by preventing ovulation, not by stopping the implantation of a fertilized egg. "These are not abortifacients," said Breuner.

GREATER USE OF EMERGENCY CONTRACEPTION

A 2006-08 survey found that 14 percent of sexually experienced girls had used emergency contraception, up from 8 percent in a 2002 survey. The most common reason was condom failure, but 13 percent of the girls said it was because of rape.

A 2010 analysis of seven randomized studies of emergency contraception found that having a morning-after prescription in hand did not increase teens' sexual activity or decrease use of standard contraceptives but did increase use of the pill and shorten the time before a teenager used it after sex.

"It's just common sense that requiring a prescription is a barrier," said Bill Alpert, chief program officer of the National Campaign to Prevent Teen and Unplanned Pregnancy. "If an august and respected medical group like AAP is suggesting providing emergency contraception to minors is OK, that is a big deal."

That is especially so when teens face other obstacles to getting emergency contraception. For instance, in a 2012 study that had 17-year-olds telephone pharmacies asking about morning-after pills, only 57 percent of them correctly told the caller that she could get the drugs without a prescription.

Another barrier is that some physicians refuse to provide the prescriptions to teenagers, while others do so only in cases of rape, AAP's research shows, suggesting that the refusal "may be related to the physician's beliefs about whether it is OK for teenagers to have sex."

But pediatricians, said AAP in its policy statement, "have a duty to inform their patients about relevant, legally available treatment options," even those "to which they object."

There are no good data on how many physicians write prescriptions ahead of time for emergency contraception. "But we do know that pediatricians don't even talk about it, let alone offer advance prescriptions," said Breuner. "We tend not to like bringing up stuff that's controversial."

One factor in the AAP's recommendation, which is being published in the journal "Pediatrics," is that although teen pregnancies in the United States have declined since 1991, the rate is higher than in most other developed countries. The percent of 15- to 18-year-olds who report ever having intercourse - just over 40 percent, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention - is, however, lower than in many developed countries. In other words, fewer of America's teens are having sex but more are getting pregnant.

"We think this is a big deal," Breuner said of the new recommendation. "The mothership of pediatricians has come out in favor of encouraging routine counseling and advance emergency-contraception prescriptions as one part of a public health strategy to reduce teen pregnancy."

Experts to exhume Arafat, seek evidence of poison

RAMALLAH, West Bank (Reuters) - The body of the Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat will be exhumed on Tuesday by a team of international experts trying to discover if he was poisoned, as many Palestinians believe.

French magistrates opened a murder inquiry in August into Arafat's death in Paris after a Swiss institute said it had discovered high levels of radioactive polonium on his clothing, which was supplied by his widow, Suha.

Arafat, who led the Palestinians' bid for a state through years of war and peace, died in Paris aged 75 in 2004 after a short, mysterious illness.

No autopsy was carried out at the time, at the request of Suha, and French doctors who treated him said they were unable to determine the cause of death.

But allegations of foul play immediately surfaced, with many locals pointing the finger at Israel, which confined Arafat to his West Bank headquarters in Ramallah for the final two and a half years of his life after a Palestinian uprising erupted.

Israel has denied any wrongdoing, inviting the Palestinian leadership to release all his medical records, which were never made public following his death.

Experts from Switzerland, France, Russia and the Palestinian territories will all take part in the exhumation, being carried out far from the public gaze, behind blue sheeting that has been carefully erected around his limestone mausoleum in Ramallah.

Workers have strung up a huge Palestinian flag to cover the top of the city centre landmark, which lies inside the presidential compound of Arafat's successor, Mahmoud Abbas.

"Samples will be taken according to a very strict protocol and these samples will be analyzed," said Darcy Christen, spokesman for the Lausanne University Hospital in Switzerland that carried out the original tests on Arafat's clothes.

"In order to do these analyses, to check, cross check and double cross check, it will take several months and I don't think we'll have anything tangible available before March or April next year," he added.

FRENCH INVESTIGATORS

Polonium, apparently ingested with food, was found to have caused the death of former Russian spy Alexander Litvinenko in London in 2006. But some experts have questioned whether Arafat could have died in this way, pointing to a brief recovery during his illness that they said was not consistent with radioactive poisoning. They also noted he did not lose all his hair.

Eight years is considered the limit to detect any traces of the fast-decaying Polonium and the Lausanne hospital questioned in August if it would be worth seeking any samples if access to Arafat's body was delayed to "October or November".

Not all of Arafat's family has agreed to the exhumation and Suha herself has not come to Ramallah for the operation. Arafat's remains will be reburied with full military honors later on Tuesday after the forensic work is complete.

Working in parallel with the forensic team, French magistrates are also in Ramallah this week questioning members of Arafat's inner circle to see if they can shed light on his death.

Once source told Reuters the French had a list of 60 questions, with at least one man facing five hours of grilling.

While many Palestinians believe that Israel was behind the death, they acknowledge that a Palestinian would almost certainly have had to administer the poison, wittingly or unwittingly.

'Twilight,' Bond, 'Lincoln' lead record weekend

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? Bella Swan, James Bond and Abe Lincoln have combined to lift Hollywood to record Thanksgiving revenue at the box office.

Kristen Stewart's finale as Bella in "The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn ? Part 2" was No. 1 again with $64 million during the five-day holiday stretch that began Wednesday, according to studio estimates Sunday.

Daniel Craig's Bond adventure "Skyfall" came in at No. 2 with $51 million, while Daniel Day-Lewis and Steven Spielberg's Civil War saga "Lincoln" finished third with $34.1 million.

According to box-office tracker Hollywood.com, the three films paced Hollywood to an all-time Thanksgiving week best of about $290 million from Wednesday to Sunday.

That tops the previous record of $273 million over Thanksgiving in 2009, when "The Twilight Saga: New Moon" led the weekend.

The "Twilight" finale, "Skyfall" and "Lincoln" finished in the same top-three rankings for the second-straight weekend as new releases were unable to dislodge the holdovers.

Released by Lionsgate's Summit Entertainment banner, "Breaking Dawn ? Part 2," pulled in $43.1 million from Friday to Sunday, raising its domestic total to $227 million. The movie added $97.4 million overseas to bring its international total to $350.8 million and its worldwide take to $577.7 million.

Sony's "Skyfall" also topped $200 million domestically, ringing up $36 million for the three-day weekend to put its U.S. total at $221.7 million.

"Lincoln," a DreamWorks film distributed by Disney, took in $25 million over the weekend to lift its domestic revenue to $62.2 million.

Leading the newcomers was Paramount and DreamWorks Animation's animated tale "Rise of the Guardians" at No. 4 with $24 million for the weekend and $32.6 million since opening Wednesday.

Close behind at No. 5 was director Ang Lee's shipwreck saga "Life of Pi" at No. 5 with $22 million over the weekend. The 20th Century Fox release has taken in $30.2 million domestically since its Wednesday debut and added $17.5 million in four Asian markets.

The weekend's other new wide release, a remake of the 1980s U.S.-invasion tale "Red Dawn," opened at No. 7 with $14.6 million, raising its total to $22 million since debuting Wednesday.

(AP) ? Juan Chiu Trujillo was 5 years old when he left his native Mexico for a visit to his father's hometown in southern China. He was 35 when he returned.

As Chiu vacationed with his parents, brother and two sisters in Guangdong province, Mexico erupted into xenophobia fueled by the economic turmoil of the Great Depression and aimed at its small, relatively prosperous Chinese minority. Authorities backed by mobs rounded up Chinese citizens, pressured them to sell their businesses and forced many to cross into the United States.

Unable to return to their home, hotel and restaurant in the southern border city of Tapachula, the Chius stayed in China and began a new life.

Chiu's father took a job at a relative's bakery and his children began learning Chinese. But their life was soon turned upside down as China was invaded by the Japanese, endured World War II and then suffered a civil war that led to a victory by communist forces that persecuted religious people. In 1941, the family fled to Macau, then a Portuguese colony.

They never stopped dreaming of Mexico, and Juan Chiu Trujillo returned in November 1960. He came back with his pregnant wife and four children and with 300 other Chinese-Mexicans after President Adolfo Lopez Mateos, trying to improve Mexico's global image, paid for their travel expenses and decreed that they would be legally allowed to live in Mexico. They were eventually granted Mexican citizenship.

Dozens of those Chinese-Mexicans and their descendants planned a gathering Saturday at a Chinese restaurant in Mexico City to celebrate for the first time the anniversary of their return, share memories and pay tribute to the late Lopez Mateos, who was being represented by his daughter.

For many, the commemoration has brought reflection on their status as Chinese-Mexicans. It's a group that feels deeply Mexican but also has been scarred by persecution by their countrymen and still faces ethnic prejudice, despite growing acceptance.

"I thought: 'My children need to know this history. They need to know where we come from, and they need to know how much hard work it has taken for us to be here,'" said Chiu's youngest son, Ignacio Chiu Chan, a 46-year-old lawyer.

Chiu Chan began a Facebook page to share photographs of the repatriation that he found in his father's photo albums and to collect the stories of other Chinese-Mexicans who were brought back by Lopez Mateos. So far, more than 260 people have joined his page, sharing images and recounting family stories.

Chiu Chan, who is married to a Mexican woman of Spanish and Indian descent and has four children, said he struggled with his identity while growing up because of bullying and got into several fights because of name calling.

He was a young bachelor when a group of elders invited him to lunch at a restaurant in Mexico City's tiny Chinatown. Three young women were at the table and he was asked to say which one he would like to marry.

"I thought, 'What are these dudes talking about?'" he recalled. "For the first time I felt Mexican and thought, 'I don't belong to this.'"

Large numbers of Chinese began arriving in northern Mexico in the late 1800s, drawn by jobs in railroad construction and cotton. The country represented a haven from the United States, which had passed the Chinese Exclusion Act, an 1882 law that banned Chinese immigration.

But from the moment they began to arrive, they faced racism, which was exacerbated during the 1910-17 Mexican Revolution and its aftermath, when the country was trying to build a national identity that celebrated the mixture of Indian and Spanish cultures.

Mexican women who married Chinese men were considered traitors, and in some cases families disowned them. With the Great Depression, large numbers of destitute Mexicans began returning home from the United States and resentment about the financial success of Chinese people grew.

"Even though there was a small number of Chinese people, their economic prowess and their position in the labor force made them a threat," said Fredy Gonzalez, a Ph.D. candidate in history at Yale University who is studying the repatriations.

In the northern border state of Sonora, anti-Chinese leagues formed and thousands of Chinese were taken to the border with the U.S. and forced to cross. Because of the Chinese Exclusion Act they were immediately detained by U.S. immigration officials and sent to China.

In 1930, Mexico had 18,000 Chinese citizens and Mexicans of Chinese descent. By 1940, there were only 4,800, Gonzalez said.

Today, there are at least 70,000 Chinese citizens and Chinese-Mexicans in the country, according to a report in 2008 by the Foreign Relations Department.

In China, Chiu Trujillo's Mexican mother spoke to her children in Spanish and often sang Mexican ranchera songs so loudly that she could be heard all around the stream where she washed the family's laundry.

Their mother also instilled in her children devotion for the Virgin of Guadalupe, Mexico's patron saint.

"We would recite the rosary in Spanish, she would teach us," Chiu, 87, remembered during an interview in his small apartment in Mexico City's rough La Merced neighborhood, its walls decorated with images of the Virgin of Guadalupe and Jesus Christ, a couple of Chinese calendars and lots of family photographs. "She would tell us, don't forget you are Catholics, don't lose your religion."

Three years after his mother and two siblings returned, Chiu, his pregnant Chinese wife and four children finally were flown to Mexico.

After working at his brother's grocery store in the Gulf coast state of Veracruz, he decided to move to Mexico City, where he worked as a cook and eventually opened his own cafeteria.

"I was able to give my sons an education. The boys all graduated from college," Chiu said. "The oldest is an accountant, the second is a chemist, the third is a mathematician, and the young one is a musician."

Chiu said he always felt more Mexican than Chinese.

"I have always thought that wherever you can find tranquility, that's where your home is," he said.
