Frequent Dilemmas that Affect Roofs in Omaha, Nebraska

Whether you anticipate it or not, roofing problems end up being a challenge and an annoyance in the budget. A thousand dollar roof requires at least a few hundreds or thousands for repairs. If you're neither mindful nor quick to act when roofing trouble is brewing, you could find yourself with a mouthful of bitter soup that's sprinkled with headaches and costly expenditures.

Omaha, Nebraska, which is far away from mountain ranges and water forms, exhibits a humid continental climate with cold winters and scorching summers. During the summer season, thunderstorms and high humidity are capable of producing violent tornadoes. Your roof can only take so much rain, wind, and sun before it begins to give way and exhibit indicators of deterioration. Before things go downhill, you must learn the commonplace problems that can have an effect on your roofing and instantly prevent them.

Moisture and Roof Leakages

As outlined by a world climate chart, during the months of May to August, the average chances of precipitation in Omaha is at twenty-five percent and summertime will bring with it a rise in humidity. The additional moisture in the air and infrequent showers can take its toll on your roof, permitting moisture to seep through splits. Uneven flashings, faulty vents, and poor drainage are the major culprits of roof leakages and the roof's future damage. You ought to be mindful of the indications of roofing leakages which include dark marks on the ceiling and decaying wood rafters or walls.

Reduced Wind Resistance and Blow-offs

Omaha is no stranger to tornadoes since the Omaha Easter Sunday Tornado of 1913 and a raging tornado in 1975 resulted in millions in damages and ruined a lot of homes. If your roof is starting to blow-off one shingle at a time, don't wait until your home loses the entire roof. There are roofers Omaha homeowners like you can call to fix this predicament and reinforce your roof.

Substandard Workmanship

To ensure that your roofing is fixed expertly, you need to choose from among dependable Omaha roofers with extensive training and expertise. Faulty installation and unsatisfactory craftsmanship may increase the odds of roofing malfunction and considerably cut down your roofing's service life. Make sure that the roofers you will choose are aware of the correct installation techniques for your chosen roofing.

Lack of Maintenance

Despite the fact that it's easy to ignore your roof, its preservation is not something you should ignore. Regular assessment could enable you to discover small complications before they advance to something more serious. Roof repair Omaha experts propose that you meticulously look over your roofing at least two times annually. If you want to read more regarding usual roof troubles, you could check out buildings.com for related articles.

Tau Botis b finally revealed

The planet Tau Bootis b [1] was one of the first exoplanets to be discovered back in 1996, and it is still one of the closest exoplanets known. Although its parent star is easily visible with the naked eye, the planet itself certainly is not, and up to now it could only be detected by its gravitational effects on the star. Tau Bootis b is a large "hot Jupiter" planet orbiting very close to its parent star.

Like most exoplanets, this planet does not transit the disc of its star (like the recent transit of Venus). Up to now such transits were essential to allow the study of hot Jupiter atmospheres: when a planet passes in front of its star it imprints the properties of the atmosphere onto the starlight. As no starlight shines through Tau Bootis b's atmosphere towards us, this means the planet's atmosphere could not be studied before.

But now, after 15 years of attempting to study the faint glow that is emitted from hot Jupiter exoplanets, astronomers have finally succeeded in reliably probing the structure of the atmosphere of Tau Bootis b and deducing its mass accurately for the first time. The team used the CRIRES [2] instrument on the Very Large Telescope (VLT) at ESO's Paranal Observatory in Chile. They combined high quality infrared observations (at wavelengths around 2.3 microns) [3] with a clever new trick to tease out the weak signal of the planet from the much stronger one from the parent star [4].

Lead author of the study Matteo Brogi (Leiden Observatory, the Netherlands) explains: "Thanks to the high quality observations provided by the VLT and CRIRES we were able to study the spectrum of the system in much more detail than has been possible before. Only about 0.01% of the light we see comes from the planet, and the rest from the star, so this was not easy".

The majority of planets around other stars were discovered by their gravitational effects on their parent stars, which limits the information that can be gleaned about their mass: they only allow a lower limit to be calculated for a planet's mass [5]. The new technique pioneered here is much more powerful. Seeing the planet's light directly has allowed the astronomers to measure the angle of the planet's orbit and hence work out its mass precisely. By tracing the changes in the planet's motion as it orbits its star, the team has determined reliably for the first time that Tau Bootis b orbits its host star at an angle of 44 degrees and has a mass six times that of the planet Jupiter in our own Solar System.

"The new VLT observations solve the 15-year old problem of the mass of Tau Bootis b. And the new technique also means that we can now study the atmospheres of exoplanets that don't transit their stars, as well as measuring their masses accurately, which was impossible before", says Ignas Snellen (Leiden Observatory, the Netherlands), co-author of the paper. "This is a big step forward."

As well as detecting the glow of the atmosphere and measuring Tau Bootis b's mass, the team has probed its atmosphere and measured the amount of carbon monoxide present, as well as the temperature at different altitudes by means of a comparison between the observations and theoretical models. A surprising result from this work was that the new observations indicated an atmosphere with a temperature that falls higher up. This result is the exact opposite of the temperature inversion -- an increase in temperature with height -- found for other hot Jupiter exoplanets [6] [7].

The VLT observations show that high resolution spectroscopy from ground-based telescopes is a valuable tool for a detailed analysis of non-transiting exoplanets' atmospheres. The detection of different molecules in future will allow astronomers to learn more about the planet's atmospheric conditions. By making measurements along the planet's orbit, astronomers may even be able to track atmospheric changes between the planet's morning and evening.

"This study shows the enormous potential of current and future ground-based telescopes, such as the E-ELT. Maybe one day we may even find evidence for biological activity on Earth-like planets in this way", concludes Ignas Snellen.

Notes

[1] The name of the planet, Tau Bootis b, combines the name of the star (Tau Bootis, or ? Bootis, ? is the Greek letter "tau", not a letter "t" ) with the letter "b" indicating that this is the first planet found around this star. The designation Tau Bootis a is used for the star itself.

[2] CRyogenic InfraRed Echelle Spectrometer

[3] At infrared wavelengths, the parent star emits less light than in the optical regime, so this is a wavelength regime favorable for separating out the dim planet's signal.

[4] This method uses the velocity of the planet in orbit around its parent star to distinguish its radiation from that of the star and also from features coming from the Earth's atmosphere. The same team of astronomers tested this technique before on a transiting planet, measuring its orbital velocity during its crossing of the stellar disc.

[5] This is because the tilt of the orbit is normally unknown. If the planet's orbit is tilted relative to the line of sight between Earth and the star then a more massive planet causes the same observed back and forth motion of the star as a lighter planet in a less tilted orbit and it is not possible to separate the two effects.

[6] Thermal inversions are thought to be characterised by molecular features in emission in the spectrum, rather than in absorption, as interpreted from photometric observations of hot Jupiters with the Spitzer Space Telescope. The exoplanet HD209458b is the best-studied example of thermal inversions in the exoplanet atmospheres.

[7] This observation supports models in which strong ultraviolet emission associated to chromospheric activity -- similar to the one exhibited by the host star of Tau Bootis b -- is responsible for the inhibition of the thermal inversion.

The best countries for entrepreneurs

Cahir Davitt / age fotostock

New Zealand, with its 4.4 million residents, welcomes both tourists and new businesses. Here, the lights of Queenstown can be seen from the air.

By Michael B. Sauter, Alexander E.M. Hess, Lisa A. Nelson and Samuel Weigley, 24/7 Wall St.

?The best countries for entrepreneurs do not necessarily have the biggest economies. In fact, based on a new report by the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development, four of the 10 best countries for entrepreneurship have among the smallest economies in the developed world. While it is no surprise that the United States and the United Kingdom are among the best countries for entrepreneurs, most businesses would not put Portugal or New Zealand among them.

24/7 Wall St.: The most dangerous cities in America

In order to determine the best countries for starting a business, the OECD took into account the time it takes to start a business, the number of procedures necessary to start a business, the cost of following through with those procedures compared to national income per capita, and the minimum paid-in capital necessary as a percentage of income per capita. Based on this data, 24/7 Wall St. identified the 10 countries where it is easiest to start a business.

According to OECD chief media officer Matthias Rumpf, the restrictions examined in this report can be a deterrent to starting a business: ?if you have to spend all the time to cope with red tape, you can?t spend that time to work on your business plan, to ship your products, and to reach out to clients.?

Just because it is easy to start up a business does not mean that small businesses are being started or that they comprise a large part of the economy. While New Zealand is one of best countries to start a small business, it ranks 21 out of 29 countries (where data were available) in the percentage of people working for small businesses. Meanwhile, the country ranks third in the percentage of people who work for large companies.

24/7 Wall St. also looked at the countries? total gross domestic product and GDP per capita, anticipating a correlation between the ease of starting a small business and the strength of the economy. However, no relationship was apparent. While several of the best countries for entrepreneurs are among the largest countries in the world, such as the U.S. and France, smaller economies such as Chile and New Zealand also made the top 10.

The OECD also looked at the perception of entrepreneurship among citizens, including perceived opportunities to starting a business, the percentage that believe they have the skills to start a business, those who believe the fear of failure would prevent them from attempting to start a new venture and the high status of successful entrepreneurs.

24/7 Wall St.: America's richest school districts

Based on the OECD report, perception does not necessarily produce good opportunities. For example, while Switzerland has the eighth-worst score for starting a new business, residents had the seventh-highest perception about opportunities. Meanwhile, South Korea is the seventh-easiest country to start a small business, but only ranked 25th in perception out of 34.

These are the 10 countries that are best for entrepreneurs.

1) New Zealand

  • ?No. of procedures necessary to start a business:?1
  • ?No. of days to start of business:?1
  • ?2010 GDP:?$134 billion
  • ?Percent employment by companies with 250+ employees:?42.1 percent

Starting a business in New Zealand only requires applying online with the New Zealand Companies Office. It takes one day and costs just $127, after which a certificate of incorporation is issued via email within minutes. Further, there is no minimum paid-in capital needed for starting a company in New Zealand. Despite the ease of starting a business, 42.13 percent of New Zealanders work for a company with more than 250 employees -- more than any nation other than the U.S. and UK. Still, New Zealand has maintained a high percentage of new companies created each year: 12.1 percent in 2007, 12.1 percent in 2008 and 10 percent in 2009.

2) Australia

  • ?No. of procedures necessary to start a business:?2
  • ?No. of days to start of business:?2
  • ?2010 GDP:?$1.1 trillion
  • ?Percent employment by companies with 250+ employees:?n/a

Entrepreneurs can enjoy the quick process of starting their businesses in two days for just over $400 in Australia. Of those residents surveyed by the OECD, 48 percent perceive Australia as being a good place for business opportunities, the fifth highest out of 27 OECD nations surveyed. Australian business owners have a total tax rate of 47.7 percent -- five percentage points higher than the average OECD tax rate, which may deter potential business owners.

3) Canada

  • ?No. of procedures necessary to start a business: 1
  • ?No. of days to start of business:?5
  • ?2010 GDP:?$1.6 trillion
  • ?Percent employment by companies with 250+ employees:?n/a

In Canada, there is just one step involved in starting a business: filing for incorporation through the online Electronic Filing Center. Filling out the necessary forms and paying all associated fees takes about five days and costs about $195. This process is relatively cheap, costing just 0.4 percent of Canada?s income per capita while requiring no minimum paid-in capital. Also, Canadian businesses were taxed in 2011, at just 28.8 percent of profit -- far less than nations such as the U.S. and France, which taxed profit at rates of 46.7 percent and 65.7 percent, respectively. However, not many Canadians have taken full advantage of the ease of starting a business. In 2008, Canada had one of the lowest percentages of start-ups of any OECD country for which information was available.

24/7 Wall St.: The states with the fastest growing economies

4) United States

  • ?No. of procedures necessary to start a business: 6
  • ?No. of days to start of business: 6
  • ?2010 GDP: $14.7 trillion
  • ?Percent employment by companies with 250+ employees: 52.8 percent

In the U.S., innovators and entrepreneurs are highly praised in the media, according to 68 percent of those surveyed by the OECD. There are very few procedures and $675 in fees necessary to start a business. There is, however, a high incidence of company failures, at 10.43 percent per year, which suggests that it may be difficult for small and medium-sized companies to stay in business. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, almost half of new companies fold after just five years of operation.

5) Ireland

  • ?No. of procedures necessary to start a business: 4
  • ?No. of days to start of business: 13
  • ?2010 GDP: $205.7 billion
  • ?Percent employment by companies with 250+ employees: 26.2 percent

Starting a business in Ireland only requires four procedures, a total of 13 days and costs between $100 and $165. The country rewards its most successful businesses by giving them special access to financing. Start-ups incorporated in the past five years, which have had at least 20 percent growth in three-consecutive years, had a 69 percent success rate in getting loans and a 100 percent success rate in receiving financing from existing stockholders. To compare, in the OECD 63.4 percent of start-ups that are growing quickly receive loans and just 77.6 percent receive shareholder financing. In 2011, 83 percent of people surveyed said successful entrepreneurs had high social standing. But the?Irish Times?estimates the number of people starting a new business each month has declined from around 2,800 in 2008 to 800 in 2010.

(AP) ? Andrew Garfield's Spidey sense is tingling ? and convincing.

Garfield, the latest actor to play Spider-Man, makes people believe he really is a spider ? even before he gets into the costume, the new film's director said Monday at the gala British premiere for "The Amazing Spider-Man."

The word the producers of the reboot, the director and Garfield's co-stars use to describe him is "committed."

Director Marc Webb said he was impressed with the actor's focus, emotional gravitas, comedy chops, and especially the way Garfield conveyed his transformation from teen-ager to spider.

"He was so committed to the physical dimension of the character, like he really was focused on feeling like a spider was taking over him and keeping that DNA alive and every time I would see him, his elbow would be moving a certain way and he was embodying the, like he really was, it felt like he was being taken over by a spider ? and when he got in the suit it really paid a lot of dividends," he explained.

The 28-year-old Garfield said he didn't go as far as method acting.

"I don't know what that word means, but I definitely was dedicated to it and wanted to make sure that we did our job as well as possible and made sure that the character is served in the way that it should be," he said.

One of the ways in which he devoted himself to becoming Peter Parker and his alter-ego, Spider-Man, was following an intense fitness regimen for six months, six days a week, plus three months of rehearsals and training for his stunt work.

Co-star Emma Stone thinks Garfield's love of the superhero since he was 3 years old makes "his dedication and protection of the character totally apparent throughout the movie."

"The Amazing Spider-Man" follows the origin story of Peter Parker, the orphan boy who gets bitten by a radioactive spider and gains unusual powers, and is the fourth film in the series.

The franchise reboot tells the story of how Parker ? a teenager with a chip on his shoulder, raised by his aunt and uncle ? tries to discover what happened to his parents and faces off with his father's former research partner, Dr. Curt Connors (Rhys Ifans), in the form of his villainous alter ego, The Lizard.

The film also tackles Parker's love story with his first high school crush, Gwen Stacy, whose father is the very police captain tasked with catching Spider-Man.

Martin Sheen and Sally Field play Parker's well-meaning uncle and aunt, who do their best to keep him from going off the rails.

Garfield was keen to follow their guidance ? as actors and mentors.

"They're incredible, they're just fine actors, and people who live well and live purely and with love, and that's very inspiring 'cause you know it's rare that you find someone who's not only a fantastic actor but a fantastically beautiful person," Garfield says, noting he took "more life advice than acting advice" from them.

"The Amazing Spider-Man" in 3D opens on July 3 in U.K. theaters.

HBT: Reds' Baker fires back angrily at Lowe

Dusty Baker was reached for comment this morning regarding the Derek Lowe stuff. And he let fire with both barrels. John Fay of Cincinnati.com has the story, with these delicious quotes among others:

?I?m not denying nothing. I didn?t order anyone to hit him. I told (Mat Latos) to buzz him and make him uncomfortable. That?s what happened. Nobody hit him. Then he hit our guy ??What he was talking about was something that he said and did a few years. You got to ask him what that was ??Go ask him since he made it public ??The word was whatever he did and said probably there was a good chance he was drinking at the ballpark and he don?t remember what he said or what he did.?

Whoa.

For what it?s worth, Baker tends to be a pretty thoughtful and mild-mannered guy. Quiet, even. So to hear all this, especially the ?he was probably drinking in the clubhouse? stuff suggests that Lowe REALLY pissed him off somehow.

For his part, Lowe said he was done talking and would offer nothing else today. So ? Dusty wins? ?I think Dusty wins.

Texas Defensive Driving News - Distracted Driving | Texas ...

Texas Defensive Driving Online News

Today?s world offers many different kinds of high tech gadgets and devices to help make our lives easier.??Many of these are mobile devices that allow for access from anywhere.? They simply access a wireless or satellite?signal so that users can quickly get online,?map out directions to where they are going, or text and call their?friends and family.???All of these are great advancements, except when they encroach on our ability to be safe.? I am talking about the dangers of distracted driving.? It isn?t good enough to simply refer to texting while driving,?since that is one of a host of possible distracting activities a driver could participate in while behind the wheel.? However?while on the topic of texting while driving?it is a problem that is getting worse not better.? Just in today?s news I say in the Houston Chronicle there was an article that referenced an anonymous national survey that polled 15,000 teenagers and it found that over 58% admit to texting while driving.? Also in today?s news was the story of Aaron Deveau who was just sentenced to 1 year in a Massachusetts jail for vehicular homicide?after his car veered into oncoming traffic killing Donald Bowley and permanently injuring his girlfriend who was riding?next to?Mr. Bowley.? It is an innocent mistake, but something that is happening more and more, especially amongst the youth.??

Texting and Driving Ban

According to the article on CNN.com about Aaron?s story, currently?38 states?ban texting for all drivers, while 31 states ban cell phone use by ?novice drivers?.? In Texas it is illegal for drivers under the age of 18 to use a wireless communication device while in a car and there is a statewide ban on cell phone use in school zones (calling or texting).? Also,?certain Texas cities?have?enacted their own distracted driving laws.? In the last Texas legislative session a bill was passed by the House and Senate to ban texting while driving statewide, but it was vetoed by the Governor.?? Unfortunately this problem isn?t going away and it has been a popluar position that it is too difficult for city and state law enforcement officers to determine if a driver is texting or doing some other activity on a mobile device in their car.? For example, how does an officer know if a driver is sending a text or receiving one, or whether or not a driver is sending a text or just looking at their call history.? For this reason, the States need to decide if they are going to allow mobile (non hands free) devices at all behind the wheel.? By banning the use of any mobile communication device while driving (not just texting), it?would make it very easy for an officer to enforce, since they aren?t required to determine what the driver is doing with the mobile device.?

Is it worth it?

Not just because we are a Texas defensive driving course provider, but as a member of society that cares about its fellow people, we find it difficult to understand why so many drivers are willing to take the risk of texting or participating in other activities that are distracting and potentially threatening to their safety while behind the wheel.? Would you be willing to close your eyes for 3-5 seconds while you are driving?? Most would say ?NO?,?yet continue to take their eyes off the road repeatedly to read a text or check for directions.? Don?t become another Aaron Deveau, and instead put your entire focus onto the task at hand which should be on scanning and searching the road for signs, signals, hazards, and other drivers.? Be an example, and be distraction free behind the wheel.? Maybe your example will effect those around you.? Here?s to safe driving!

What to know about the Wisconsin recall vote

Q: What started the effort to recall Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker?

A: The recall effort was born Feb. 11, 2011. That was when Walker released his plan to address a state budget shortfall that called on most public workers to pay more for health insurance and pension benefits, and, most important, give up nearly all their collective bargaining rights. The proposal set the recall fire, led to protests that lasted weeks and grew as large as 100,000 people. It motivated 14 Senate Democrats to flee the state for three weeks in a vain attempt to stop the bill. Walker signed it into law March 11 virtually unchanged from how he proposed it.

Q: Isn't this unusual? How often do governors face recalls?

A: This is the third recall election of a governor in U.S. history. The other two were successful in throwing the incumbent out of office ? against California Gov. Gray Davis in 2003 and North Dakota Gov. Lynn Frazier in 1921.

Q: If there's an effort to kick Walker out of office, does that mean his approval rating is low?

A: The recall is more a result of how divided the state is over Walker and his policies. His approval rating among Wisconsin respondents in the most recent Marquette University Law School poll was 51 percent, just 1 percentage point less than President Barack Obama's.

Q: Who's footing the bill for the recall campaigns? Taxpayers? Or someone else?

A: There has been much ado about all the campaign money flowing into Wisconsin from out of state, and for good reason. The recall election has been unlike anything seen before in Wisconsin, with at least $62 million spent by the candidates and outside groups so far. Walker was the top spender at $29 million, with Democrats including Barrett spending about $4 million. Outside groups have spent $21 million and issue ad groups that don't have to disclose their spending have put in at least $7.5 million. That, of course, is donated money. Taxpayers are anything but off the hook. The recall and a primary for it are special elections that otherwise would not be held. State elections officials estimate the cost of a statewide election to taxpayers is $9 million, for a total of $18 million.

Q: How has the economy played into the campaign? What are the candidates pledging to do to create jobs?

A: The recall may have started over collective bargaining, but the overriding issue has become job creation. Walker promised in 2010 to create 250,000 jobs over four years and he is not on pace to meet that goal. How far afield he is depends on what set of numbers are used to measure his promise. Monthly jobs figures, based on a survey of about 3.5 percent of Wisconsin employers, show job creation is flat since Walker took office. But a combination of data, including 2011 numbers derived from a more comprehensive census of employers, shows about 33,000 new jobs have been created in Walker's term.

Barrett, meanwhile, has been more vague, something Walker has used against him. Barrett has said he will adopt a comprehensive jobs agenda that emphasizes manufacturing, small business, clean energy, venture capital, high-tech and bio tech and our agricultural rural economy. He has criticized Walker for making jobs secondary to attacks on public employee unions.

Q: Is Walker the only politician on the ballot facing a recall? What about people who supported him?

A: The Walker-Barrett race is in the national spotlight for obvious reasons, but also on the ballot are recall elections for GOP Lt. Gov. Rebecca Kleefisch, who faces Democrat Mahlon Mitchell, and four GOP state Senate seats. If Democrats can win any one of those seats, they will hold a majority in the Senate for the first time since 2010 and could obstruct any further advancement of Walker's agenda if he wins.

Q. If someone does not like the results, can there be another recall?

A. Wisconsin law allows for recalls of anyone who has been in office for at least a year. The winner will serve the remainder of Walker's current term, which runs through 2014. Office holders can only stand for recall once per term, so if Walker wins he will remain in office at least through 2014.

Q. Will turnout be an indicator of an outcome?

A. Turnout is key for both Walker and Barrett in a race that polls show has few undecided voters. Walker must pull strongly from Republican parts of the state, primarily in the conservative Milwaukee suburbs. Barrett needs to do well with his base in Madison and Milwaukee and keep Walker's margin of victory low in the Republican-leaning Fox Valley area around Green Bay. The election, if it's close, could be won or lost based on how well the candidates do in western Wisconsin in swing counties along the Mississippi border, as well as other swing parts of the state like in Racine County south of Milwaukee.

Q. What happens Wednesday?

A. If Walker wins the recall, little will change. He will remain governor, and Barrett will remain mayor of Milwaukee. However, if Barrett wins, Walker will remain in office for only a short time. The state elections board has just 18 days to issue a certificate declaring the election results official. When that's done, he is no longer governor.
